The built-in Omnisonic speakers support Dolby Atmos, and the dual far-field mics built into the laptop should help you sound crisp and clear in your video calls.

We’re hoping the Surface Laptop 5 will sound just as good, since Microsoft appears to have changed little in the laptop’s speaker design. Whether that explains it or not, in our Surface Laptop 4 review we applauded how clear and warm the laptop’s speakers are, and we were surprised at how much bass this little laptop pumps out. Microsoft claims the laptop can deliver unexpected sound quality and depth because the laptop’s designed to “bounce” sound from the speakers beneath the keyboard up off the screen and forward to envelop you. One of the most surprising aspects of the Surface Laptop 4 is how good it sounds. The addition of Thunderbolt 4 support is great, and much-needed, but it’s not enough of an upgrade over the Surface Laptop 4 to get excited about. I’ve got bad news for anyone hoping for more than the paltry port selection offered on last year’s Surface Laptop 4: Microsoft hasn’t done much to improve things on the Surface Laptop 5.īoth sizes of Surface Laptop 5 ship with the same complement of ports: 1x USB-A 3.1 port, 1x USB-C port with support for USB 4/Thunderbolt 4, a 3.5mm headphone jack and the Surface Connect port for power. Personally I’d have loved to see Microsoft outfit the Surface Laptop 5 with an OLED screen option, since 4K resolution is wasted on a 13.5-inch laptop screen. That’s identical to what was on offer on last year’s Surface Laptops, and it’s a little underwhelming now that laptops with either OLED or 4K (or both) displays are becoming more common. Specifically, the 13.5-inch Surface Laptop 5 screen has a native resolution of 2,256 x 1,504 while the larger model sports a 2,496 x 1,664 display. They both offer 201 PPI (pixels per inch), though the smaller model has a lower resolution. The PixelSense displays on both sizes of Surface Laptop 5 are touchscreens with a 3:2 aspect ratio and Dolby Vision IQ2 support. Much like last year the 15-inch Surface Laptop is only available in metal finishes (Matte Black or Platinum), while the smaller 13.5-inch model is available with either Alcantara fabric lining (Platinum metal with Ice Blue Alcantara) or plain metal in Sage, Sandstone or Matte Black.

The 15-inch Surface Laptop 5 is larger, like last year’s model, measuring 13.4 x 9.6 x 0.58 inches and weighing 3.44 pounds. The Surface Laptop 5 looks an awful lot like the Surface Laptop 4, but this time you can get it in green.
